What’s Counselling about?
Counselling is about identifying patterns in the way we behave.
For example, I may feel misunderstood and angry with my partner. These feelings might motivate my behaviour into being intolerant, hostile and keen to always assert myself in conflictual situations.
Counselling could allow me to see that behind my feelings of anger and offensivness/defensiveness I have anxiety that my partner may not hear and see the real me, a person who is fearful of judgements because my partner’s judgements might mean that I am misunderstood by them and then not accepted by them and then I am at risk of being overlooked….. rejected…..abandoned.
Whatever intervention I offer in my work this week in Bournemouth, Poole or Dorset, be it CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Mindfulness, Psychodrama, Person Centered Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Psychoanalysis, Solution Focused Therapy, Integrative Therapy or Family Therapy, I understand that sometimes how my clients present themselves may simply be the way they protect themselves from harm and in time we might enable them to adopt different ways of feeling and being.
