I have been school counselling for over fifteen years. I am now the lead practitioner in a large inner city, multi-cultural academy. Coming to the end of the school year presents several contradictions for me as a counsellor working in schools.
Holidays are always welcome and finishing pieces of work is satisfying, particularly when they present learning opportunities and this year has been particularly beneficial for me in that regard.
However, work with children and young people who are struggling with life is not something one is ever able to, or ever wants to, switch off from.
Equally most, if not all, of the young people who privilege me with their stories are not able to switch off from the worries and concerns they share with me.
So, for me at least, the holidays bring a welcome break but also concerns about the experiences that some of the young people I meet will be exposed to.
How much of my work do I take with me when I’m school counselling? All of it. I accept I am powerless but that doesn’t mean I switch off to the young people who have trusted me with their stories. However, I think I have learnt enough to know how to manage myself around the work I do.
In the beginning, years ago, I would be at work in my head even when I was away from work, but, in doing so, I began to realise that I was placing too much pressure on myself, my family and the people I support. Further, I saw that I was ignoring trust and balance, two things the universe provides that enables me to see that all I can do is keep learning, do my best and to have faith in that that is the most I can do.
